📣 THE DEVIL’S CLAW (SENGAPARILE) EXPORTS TO GERMANY.
To All Partners, Stakeholders, Farmers and the Agricultural Community,
The Devil’s Claw Exports to Germany
6 months ago our Moringa buyers added 46 other high value crops to their import portfolio and amongst them is the Devil’s Claw, they told us there is plenty of it in Botswana, but farming communities and villagers do not know its value and how to harvest it.
Having done well in the Moringa farming sector and almost ready for exports and having put a great and sustainable foundation on the setting up of Agriculture Based Clusters (ABCs), we formally THERFORE announce our organisation’s entry into the Devil’s Claw (Sengaparile / Harpagophytum spp.) sector.
To prepare our entry into this sector we Recent conducted a comprehensive field assessments and would like to the results as overwhelming and can now confirm the widespread presence of Devil’s Claw across multiple Districts, with especially significant densities in the Southern District of Botswana. This pervasive distribution presents an unprecedented opportunity for rural economic empowerment, export-oriented value chains, and sustainable natural product development.
Devil’s Claw is a medicinal and nutraceutical herb of global commercial significance, prized for its robust anti-inflammatory properties and high demand in European and international herbal markets. Over recent years, processed Devil’s Claw products have been marketed at substantial price points abroad, with dried root and derived formulations commanding significant premiums. For example, dried Devil’s Claw root is retailed in Europe at approximately €20–€32 per kilogram for raw or lightly processed botanicals and up to €30+ per kilogram in equine or feed-grade preparations.
In refined extract or supplement form, prices can escalate further — nearing €2,5–€320 per kilogram equivalent of active extract — demonstrating the high value of processed derivatives.
These international price benchmarks underscore the transformational potential of Devil’s Claw as an agricultural export commodity and a value-added natural health product.
📌 STRATEGIC SECTOR ENGAGEMENT & OPPORTUNITY
In response to this discovery and the compelling global market signals, we are initiating a coordinated sector engagement programme that will include:
1. Farmer & Rural Producer Mobilisation
- Identification and registration of producers across key districts.
- Formation of production clusters and community-based enterprise groups.
- Customised training in sustainable harvesting, quality control and agronomic best practice.
2. Technical & Value-Addition Training
- Field and post-harvest training covering harvesting protocols, primary processing, drying, grading and packaging.
- Development of post-harvest facilities and cooperatives to ensure market-ready quality standards.
3. Guaranteed Offtake and Price Structure
To catalyse participation and ensure producer confidence, we are introducing a standard farm-gate buying price for Devil’s Claw in Botswana of:
🇧🇼 2,5 Euros per kg (equivalent)
— Botswana Farm-Gate Price for Wild / Cultivated Dry Root
This price reflects our commitment to remunerative returns for producers and is competitive within the global supply chain context, especially for primary raw material intended for export and industrial processing.
