Botswana’s Moringa Movement — A Harvest of Hope, A Call for Support

Today at Elco Farms, something powerful happened.

A great Moringa harvest happened.
hope was being harvested.
It was economic transformation in motion.
It was Botswana's agricultural future unfolding.

Farm employees, alongside members of Hunter’s Global Network (HGN) and Farmer’s Pride International, worked side by side — harvesting, sorting, and preparing Moringa leaves for drying.

There were no spectators.

Everyone worked.

Hands in the fields.
Hands in the sorting area.
Hands in the drying preparation.

This is what Agriculture-Based Clusters (ABCs) look like in practice — collaboration, shared effort, shared growth, and shared prosperity.

But while the harvest brought excitement, it also revealed the realities and challenges facing Botswana’s emerging Moringa industry.

A Movement Growing Faster Than Capacity

As we conclude harvesting at Elco Farms, we now have six more farms ready for harvesting.

Six more farms.

Six more opportunities.

Six more communities waiting.

Six more stories of hope.

However, all these farms are facing the same critical challenges:

  • Lack of harvesting labour
  • Limited drying facilities
  • Insufficient storage infrastructure
  • Limited post-harvest handling equipment
  • Transport constraints

These are not failures.

These are signs of growth.

The farms are producing.

The farmers are committed.

The crop is ready.

But the support systems must now catch up with the production momentum.

The Reality on the Ground

Moringa harvesting is time-sensitive.

Once ready:

  • Leaves must be harvested quickly
  • Leaves must be sorted immediately
  • Leaves must be dried within hours
  • Leaves must be stored properly

If this process is delayed:

  • Quality declines
  • Export value drops
  • Farmer income decreases

This is why harvesting labour and drying infrastructure are not luxuries.

They are critical production infrastructure.

Botswana's Opportunity

Botswana stands at a historic agricultural turning point.

Moringa offers:

  • Climate-resilient farming
  • Year-round harvesting
  • Export market potential
  • Job creation opportunities
  • Rural economic transformation

From:

  • Small farmers
  • Youth groups
  • Women groups
  • Community farms
  • Commercial farms

The momentum is building.

The farmers are ready.

The land is producing.

Now Botswana must scale the support systems.

A Respectful Appeal to the Vice President of Botswana

Your Honourable Vice President,

Today, we witnessed Botswana’s agricultural future in motion at Elco Farms.

Farmers, workers, and partners came together to harvest Moringa — a crop that is rapidly becoming a symbol of economic empowerment and rural transformation.

However, as production grows, we are now facing critical operational challenges:

  • Shortage of harvesting labour
  • Limited drying infrastructure
  • Lack of storage facilities
  • Insufficient post-harvest equipment

We respectfully appeal for support in the following areas:

1. Harvesting Support Programs

  • Community harvesting teams
  • Youth employment programs
  • Seasonal agricultural labour support

This will:

  • Create jobs
  • Increase production efficiency
  • Improve farmer incomes

2. Drying Infrastructure Development

Support for:

  • Solar drying facilities
  • Community drying centers
  • Cluster-based drying facilities

This will:

  • Maintain product quality
  • Improve export standards
  • Increase farmer profitability

3. Storage Infrastructure

Support for:

  • Cluster storage facilities
  • Cold storage where needed
  • Processing preparation facilities

This will:

  • Reduce post-harvest losses
  • Improve supply chain management
  • Enable bulk exports

Agriculture-Based Clusters — The Solution

Under the Agriculture-Based Clusters (ABCs) framework, these facilities can be:

  • Shared across farmers
  • Located within communities
  • Scalable across districts

This ensures:

  • Efficiency
  • Inclusivity
  • Sustainability

A National Movement in Motion

Hunter, what we witnessed today at Elco Farms is happening across Botswana:

  • Farms ready for harvesting
  • Farmers joining the movement
  • Communities mobilizing
  • Youth getting involved
  • Women leading production

Botswana is quietly building a Moringa economy.

And with the right support, Botswana can become:

  • A regional supplier
  • A continental leader
  • A global exporter

A Story Still Being Written

Today we harvested.

Tomorrow we harvest six more farms.

Next week, even more farms.

This is not just farming.

This is:

  • Job creation
  • Rural development
  • Economic transformation
  • Agricultural industrialization

Today at Elco Farms we did not just harvest leaves.

We harvested:

Hope
Opportunity
Transformation
And the future of Botswana agriculture.

And with support from leadership, partners, and communities…

Botswana’s Moringa story will become Africa’s agricultural success story.

The movement has started.
The farms are ready.
The harvest has begun.

And Botswana is rising. 🌿
