TURMERIC: FROM RHIZOME TO POWDER, OLEORESIN, CURCUMIN, TRACEABLE INGREDIENTS AND EXPORT

 

DAILY AGRICULTURAL INTELLIGENCE — 2 SEPTEMBER 2026

Today’s focus returns to one of the most commercially interesting high-value spice crops: Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.).

The key lesson is not simply that turmeric can be grown and dried. The larger opportunity lies in designing an integrated system around:

planting material → farm production → harvest → curing → drying → polishing → grading → milling → extraction → laboratory testing → traceability → buyer specification → export

India provides the clearest global benchmark. According to India’s Spices Board, the country exported 175,896 tonnes of turmeric during 2025–26, worth approximately US$327.2 million. Turmeric represented about 7% of India’s total spice-export earnings by value in that financial year. Indian Spices

The larger message for Botswana and Africa is therefore:

Do not build a turmeric programme whose final product is merely a sack of dried rhizomes. Build an ingredient industry around the crop.


TURMERIC IS NOT JUST A SPICE — IT CAN BECOME AN INDUSTRIAL INGREDIENT

When people see turmeric, most immediately think of yellow powder.

I see several different businesses.

I see:

Seed Rhizomes → Farms → Fresh Turmeric → Dried Fingers → Powder → Oleoresin → Curcumin → Food Ingredients → Cosmetics → Export

This is why we need to stop discussing high-value crops only in terms of hectares.

The question should be:

How many industries can we build around one crop?


๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ INDIA SHOWS THE SCALE

India’s Spices Board reports that the country exported 175,896 tonnes of turmeric worth approximately US$327.2 million during 2025–26. Indian Spices

The year before, in 2024–25, India exported 176,325 tonnes, worth approximately US$341.54 million. Commerce Ministry

India’s Ministry of Commerce also reported that India accounted for approximately 66% of global turmeric export value in 2024, with Indian turmeric exports valued at about US$333.25 million against a reported world total of US$502.74 million. Commerce Ministry

That tells us something very important:

Turmeric can move far beyond local spice trading.


THE CROP STARTS UNDERGROUND

The commercial part of turmeric is the rhizome, or underground stem.

India’s Spices Board describes turmeric as a tropical crop that can be grown from sea level to around 1,200 metres above sea level and warns that the crop does not tolerate waterlogging or alkaline conditions. Indian Spices

That is the first farming lesson.

Before planting turmeric, test:

soil texture
drainage
soil pH
water quality
organic matter
disease history

Do not plant valuable rhizomes into land where drainage has not been understood.


๐Ÿ’ง WATER MANAGEMENT IS NOT ABOUT FLOODING THE CROP

Turmeric likes moisture, but it does not tolerate stagnant water.

That means irrigation must support root and rhizome development without creating conditions that encourage rot.

The practical farm system should therefore include:

raised beds where appropriate
drainage channels
controlled irrigation
mulching
soil-moisture monitoring

The exact irrigation schedule must always be determined locally according to rainfall, soil texture, temperature and water-holding capacity.


๐ŸŒฟ PLANTING MATERIAL IS A BIOSECURITY ISSUE

Turmeric is propagated primarily through rhizomes rather than seed.

That means infected planting material can move disease directly into a new field.

A commercial programme should therefore manage planting material as a traceable input:

Source → Variety → Lot → Farmer → Plot

For Agriculture-Based Clusters, this is important.

Farmers should not independently source unknown planting rhizomes from multiple informal sources and then mix them into one commercial export programme.


๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝ‍๐ŸŒพ FARM MANAGEMENT MUST BE STANDARDISED

A structured turmeric farm should maintain records for:

planting date
rhizome source
field identification
soil amendments
fertiliser applications
irrigation
pest management
disease management
crop-protection applications
harvest date
harvest lot

This becomes particularly important when the final market requires residue testing, organic certification or ingredient-level traceability.


 HARVEST IS ONLY THE BEGINNING

Turmeric is unusual because its commercial form is not simply dug from the soil, bagged and exported.

India’s Spices Board defines commercial turmeric as rhizomes that are:

boiled → dried → cleaned → polished Indian Spices

That means post-harvest management is part of the production system.


CURING IS WHERE VALUE STARTS TO CHANGE

After harvest, rhizomes are traditionally cured through controlled cooking or boiling before drying.

The objective is not simply to make the product yellow.

Curing helps develop the commercial characteristics of dried turmeric and prepares the rhizome for drying and polishing.

This stage needs:

clean water
controlled cooking equipment
hygienic surfaces
batch identification
controlled drying
protection from contamination

For organised clusters, this is exactly the type of operation that should be centralised.

Instead of 100 farmers each boiling turmeric differently, one processing centre can maintain a defined standard.


☀️ DRYING IS A FOOD-SAFETY OPERATION

Poor drying can destroy the commercial value of turmeric.

A good drying system should protect rhizomes from:

soil
dust
animals
rain
microbial contamination
uncontrolled moisture

The objective is not merely “dry-looking turmeric”.

The objective is a stable, testable ingredient that meets the buyer’s moisture and microbiological requirements.

For premium markets, I would favour controlled raised drying systems, solar dryers or appropriate mechanical drying rather than uncontrolled drying directly on bare ground.


๐Ÿงช THEN COMES THE LABORATORY

This is one of the most important differences between commodity trading and ingredient trading.

India’s national turmeric strategy includes quality evaluation and laboratory analysis, including assessment of intrinsic parameters such as curcumin content, alongside food safety and export compliance. Commerce Ministry

The commercial question should therefore not only be:

How many tonnes do you have?

It should also be:

What variety?
What moisture?
What curcumin level?
What microbiological status?
What pesticide-residue status?
What lot?
What farm?

That is how turmeric becomes an ingredient.


ONE RHIZOME — MANY PRODUCTS

The Spices Board identifies multiple commercial uses for turmeric.

These include:

This is the point where Africa must think differently.

If we export only dried rhizomes, somebody else may perform the higher-value:

milling
standardisation
extraction
formulation
packaging
branding

We should progressively build those industries ourselves.

India established the National Turmeric Board in 2023.

Its objectives include:

new product development
value addition
international promotion
market research
export infrastructure
stronger supply chains
quality and safety compliance
grower skills
research

This tells us something very important.

A country that understands a strategic crop eventually stops treating it merely as agricultural production.

It builds institutions around the crop.


๐ŸŒ WHERE DOES INDIA SELL TURMERIC?

India’s Ministry of Commerce identified the five leading destinations over the period reviewed as:

Bangladesh
United Arab Emirates
United States
Malaysia
Morocco

In 2024–25 alone, India shipped approximately:

34,073 tonnes to Bangladesh

25,136 tonnes to UAE

8,536 tonnes to USA

8,826 tonnes to Malaysia

9,390 tonnes to Morocco Commerce Ministry

That tells African producers to think beyond one market.


๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EXPORT TO EUROPE REQUIRES RESIDUE CONTROL

The European Commission states that pesticide Maximum Residue Levels apply equally to food produced inside the European Union and imported from outside the EU.

Where no specific MRL exists for a pesticide-product combination, a general default of 0.01 mg/kg applies under the relevant EU framework. Food Safety

approved chemical
application rate
application date
pre-harvest interval
buyer restrictions
laboratory testing

before harvest.

TRACEABILITY STARTS WHEN THE INPUT IS APPLIED.

Not when the product reaches the warehouse.

For Botswana, I see turmeric as a crop that should be developed carefully through pilot Agriculture-Based Clusters, not uncontrolled acreage expansion.

A structured cluster could look like this:

10. MARKET

Local → Regional → Export

That is how we build a turmeric economy.


MY TAKEAWAY FOR AFRICA

Do not ask only:

Can turmeric grow here?

Ask:

Can we produce turmeric to a defined specification and turn it into several internationally tradable products?

That is a much more powerful question.

The future is:

RHIZOME → INGREDIENT → INDUSTRY

Farmers, processors, laboratories, investors, banks and governments should begin designing turmeric as an integrated bio-industrial value chain, not simply another field crop.
