1. The Crucial Role of Agrifood Systems: The world’s food systems are at a critical juncture. Our ability to nourish a growing global population is under threat, and the challenges we face are multifaceted. Agrifood systems encompass a wide range of interconnected activities, from primary food production to distribution, marketing, and consumption. These systems are not only about feeding people but also about sustaining economies and ecosystems. However, they come with hidden costs—equivalent to at least $10 trillion annually—that impact health and the environment¹. To build and maintain sustainable agrifood systems, we need broader changes on socioeconomic and environmental levels.

2. Forces Shaping the Future: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) identifies 18 drivers that shape the future of agrifood systems. These forces are interconnected and include poverty, inequalities, geopolitical instability, and resource degradation. Without transformation, we risk persistent food insecurity, resource destruction, and unsustainable economic growth. Strategic foresight is essential for governments and stakeholders to analyze trends and envision alternative scenarios².

3. Four Scenarios for Agrifood Systems: The FAO report outlines four possible futures:

• More of the same: Continuing along the current path.
• Adjusted future: Making necessary adaptations.
• Race to the bottom: Prioritizing short-term gains.
• Trading off for sustainability: Balancing economic, social, and environmental factors. Each scenario has implications for food security, resource use, and global well-being. Choosing the right path requires foresight and collective action².
