TO THE PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA, BETP SHALL TRANSFORM YOUR COUNTY
His Excellency Advocate Gideon Duma Boko
President of the Republic of Botswana
Gaborone, Botswana
His Honour Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe
Vice President of the Republic of Botswana
Gaborone, Botswana
Your Excellency the President,
Your Honour the Vice President,
I normally report through BETP structures but I don't have enough space to give all briefings.
Therefore allow me to write this public letter with the highest respect and a strong sense of national duty to formally brief Your Excellency and the Honourable Vice President on the successful establishment and operationalisation of the Agriculture Based Clusters (ABCs) https://www.farmersprideinternational.org/agri-based-clusters, beginning with the Moringa-anchored Farming Clusters, now duly registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) and recognised as a participating initiative under the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP).
This achievement represents a critical transition from policy intent to practical, ground-level implementation in Botswana’s agriculture-led economic transformation agenda.
The ABC initiative is led by Farmer’s Pride International, an agriculture subsidiary of the Botswana registered Hunter’s Global Network, a Global Agriculture based Cluster that is deliberately structured as a cumulative, export-driven, value-addition-focused agricultural system.
The Moringa-anchored clusters form the first operational pillar of this national strategy and have already demonstrated that Botswana can build globally competitive agricultural value chains using local leadership, local capital, and local commitment.
At the centre of this progress is the Agriculture Based Clusters (ABCs) model, which we have positioned as the flagship implementation mechanism of the full Rural and Urban Agriculture Innovative Production Program (RUAIPP), https://www.farmersprideinternational.org/fpi-i-ruaipp-agriculture-program. Through this model, production, aggregation, training, processing, certification, value addition, and export readiness are integrated into a single, coherent economic system linking farmers directly to national and international markets.
Your Excellency and Honourable Vice President, I further wish to bring to your attention a significant international development that strengthens this initiative.
In February, specifically during the week commencing the 15th, a senior Moringa and Devil’s Claw offtaker and technical expert from Germany will be visiting Botswana. This engagement follows ongoing international trade discussions and represents a major vote of confidence in Botswana’s agricultural potential. During this visit, the German partner has formally offered to serve as a Technical Advisor in the structured establishment and scaling of Agriculture Based Clusters, https://www.farmersprideinternational.org/agri-based-clusters with a particular focus on export compliance, quality systems, and international market alignment.
Of strategic national importance is that this technical advisory role will support the establishment of cluster-linked vocational and practical training centres, to be attached to and aligned with the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN). Notably, the German partner already has an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BUAN, which creates an immediate and credible pathway for skills transfer, applied agricultural training, and the development of industry-ready farmers and agro-processors.
This integration of clusters + vocational training + academic partnership + export markets positions Botswana uniquely on the continent and reinforces the credibility of ABCs as a long-term national development instrument.
The broader implications are both economic and political:
-
Economically, ABCs unlock scale, standardisation, and consistency—key prerequisites for export agriculture. They reduce fragmentation, lower transaction costs, strengthen traceability, and enable Botswana to supply international markets reliably with value-added products. This places Botswana firmly on the path to becoming the Breadbasket of Africa, not merely in production volumes but in high-value, processed, climate-smart agricultural exports.
-
Politically, the success of ABCs affirms Botswana’s development philosophy under your leadership: empowering citizens to produce, process, and trade competitively, rather than depend. It demonstrates that domestic innovation, when aligned with national policy, delivers tangible results and strengthens economic sovereignty.
Importantly, this progress has been achieved without external financial support. It has been driven by local resources, local expertise, and institutional discipline. However, we are confident that with structured support and partnership through BETP, the scale, speed, and impact of this initiative will increase significantly—expanding cluster coverage, accelerating agro-processing infrastructure, and creating sustainable employment, particularly for women and young people.
Our organisation remains firmly committed to value addition over raw commodity exports. The Moringa and Devil’s Claw clusters are already structured to support downstream industries including nutraceuticals, food products, cosmetics, animal feed, and pharmaceutical inputs—ensuring Botswana exports finished and semi-finished products, capturing greater economic value locally.
Your Excellency and Honourable Vice President, we respectfully submit that:
- The ABC model is ready for national scaling across multiple high-value crops.
- RUAIPP, implemented through ABCs, provides a practical vehicle for rural revitalisation, urban food systems, industrialisation, and export growth.
- BETP support will accelerate implementation and align this initiative even more closely with the national development priorities of the new administration.
We have demonstrated that it can be done. With partnership, policy alignment, and continued national leadership, we shall do more—for food security, exports, jobs, skills development, and Botswana’s economic independence.
I remain committed to serving Botswana’s transformation agenda with discipline, integrity, and measurable results.
Respectfully submitted,
Elfas Zadzagomo (Hunter)
