CHINA’S BIO-INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE: BAMBOO, CACTUS AND ALOE VERA

Aloe vera

No reliable current national Chinese employment figure is publicly reported. However, China has substantial commercial farms, ingredient plants, cosmetics manufacturers, R&D centres and retail networks

The figures should therefore not be presented as if the same statistical methodology exists for all three crops. Bamboo has national government statistics. The cactus figures are from China's leading Yunnan industrial cluster. Aloe is commercially established, but I could not find an authoritative current national figure for total Chinese aloe employment or total aloe enterprises, so it would be misleading to invent one.


1. BAMBOO: CHINA HAS TURNED A PLANT INTO A RMB 520 BILLION INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY

Bamboo is probably one of the clearest demonstrations of what we mean when we say that agriculture can become manufacturing.

According to China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China now has nearly 8 million hectares of bamboo forest, produces approximately 150 million tonnes of bamboo annually, has more than 10,000 bamboo-processing enterprises, supports over 29 million people throughout the industrial chain, and has developed more than 15,000 types of bamboo products. Annual bamboo-industry output value has exceeded RMB 520 billion, approximately US$74 billion. (Government of China)

That is no longer simply forestry. It is an industrial platform.

China has connected bamboo to construction, furniture, flooring, pulp and paper, packaging, food, tableware, textiles, composite materials, household goods, crafts, tourism, biomass energy and increasingly bamboo substitutes for plastics.

The National Forestry and Grassland Administration reported that China's bamboo-product import and export trade reached approximately US$2.3 billion in 2024. It also describes complete industrial chains that include bamboo strips and panels upstream, flooring and furniture downstream, bamboo crafts, bamboo food processing and utilisation of residues. China is also deliberately moving bamboo into higher-technology applications. Government-backed R&D is examining bamboo-based materials for everyday products, automobiles, agriculture and plastic replacement. (Forestry)

Major bamboo industries

I would classify China's bamboo economy into approximately 12 major industrial families:

  1. Construction and engineered building materials
  2. Furniture and flooring
  3. Pulp, paper and packaging
  4. Tableware and single-use plastic substitutes
  5. Textiles, fibres and fabrics
  6. Food and bamboo-shoot processing
  7. Charcoal, activated carbon and biomass energy
  8. Automotive and composite materials
  9. Household and consumer products
  10. Agricultural products and equipment applications
  11. Crafts, cultural industries and tourism
  12. Biobased materials, chemicals and advanced industrial products

Within those broad industries sit thousands of individual SKUs — hence China's figure of more than 15,000 bamboo product types.

Where is China selling?

China's bamboo economy is heavily domestic but also strongly export-oriented. Government figures put total bamboo-product trade at about US$2.3 billion in 2024. (Forestry)

Looking specifically at the narrower customs category for raw bamboo, 2024 destinations included the Netherlands, United States, Spain, Poland, United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Japan, Germany, South Korea, France, Australia and Canada. (World Integrated Trade Solution)

Chinese bamboo furniture also reaches markets such as the United States, Germany, Poland, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. (World Integrated Trade Solution)

So China's strategy is:

Grow bamboo → process bamboo → engineer bamboo → manufacture products → replace other materials → brand products → export products.

That is bio-industrialisation.


2. CACTUS: CHINA IS TURNING DIFFICULT DRYLAND INTO AN INDUSTRIAL ASSET

The cactus case is especially interesting for Botswana because it demonstrates what can happen when a country stops viewing dry conditions purely as an agricultural limitation.

In Zhuangzitian Village, Wenshan, Yunnan Province, rocky desertification had left around 80% of the landscape barren. Cactus, however, was capable of surviving those conditions. China subsequently began building an organised commercial industry around that biological resource. (China News )

By the end of 2025, cactus cultivation in the locality had expanded to more than 5,000 mu — approximately 333 hectares — while vegetation coverage increased to around 75%. (China News )

But the more important development is the industrial chain.

A specialised agricultural investment company entered the area and developed commercial cultivation, processing and market development. More than 10 value-added cactus products have already been developed, including dried products, enzymes and cactus beer. Even the spines are being converted into handicrafts instead of being discarded as waste. (China.org.cn)

This is exactly the principle of whole-biomass utilisation that we have been discussing for bio-industry.

Jobs

The cactus industrial chain has reportedly created more than 1,000 direct jobs and helped approximately 36,000 farming households increase their incomes. (China.org.cn)

That distinction is important: 36,000 is not 36,000 direct factory jobs. It refers to farming households that have benefited indirectly from the wider industrial chain.

The village's industrial-chain output value reached approximately RMB 17.32 million in 2024. (China News )

A subsequent report describes a 4,000 m² processing facility, an approximately 20-member R&D team, integrated harvesting, processing and storage, and more than ten higher-value products. (China Daily)

Major cactus industries

From the commercial activity already reported, I would identify at least eight industry families around cactus:

China is therefore monetising not only the plant but also processing, knowledge, branding, gastronomy, tourism and culture.

Export market

In August 2025, approximately 20 tonnes of edible cactus pads were exported to Vietnam, reportedly China's first cross-border shipment of this product. (China Daily)

Xinhua described this more broadly as China's first export shipment of edible cactus to Southeast Asian countries and reported Japan as the next target market. (China News )

This is an industry that has progressed from:

Barren land → cactus → organised farmers → processing → R&D → branded products → domestic sales → export.

For Botswana, that progression deserves very serious attention.


3. ALOE VERA: ONE LEAF CAN FEED SEVERAL MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES

Aloe demonstrates a different industrialisation model.

The principal value is not necessarily in selling the raw leaf. The economic opportunity lies in separating, stabilising, concentrating, drying, extracting, formulating and standardising what is contained inside that leaf.

Chinese aloe manufacturers already produce industrial intermediate ingredients such as aloe gel juice, concentrated gel, spray-dried powders, freeze-dried powders, whole-leaf powder and extracts.

The China Food Additives and Ingredients Association lists Aloecorp China products including aloe gel juice, aloe gel powders, whole-leaf powder and aloe extracts, with applications across food, beverages, health foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

An earlier China Daily report on Hainan Zhongchen Biological Engineering illustrates the scale that an integrated aloe-processing facility can achieve. At that time, its stated annual capacities included:

8,000 tonnes of aloe gel
800 tonnes of concentrate
25 tonnes of freeze-dried powder
100 tonnes of direct-heat-dried powder.

The plant produced dried powder, gel, gel spray, concentrated juice and juice. (China Daily)

The numbers are older, so I would use them as evidence of established processing capability rather than describe them as China's present national production statistics.

The industrial families around Aloe vera

Aloe can realistically support at least eight major manufacturing and service industries:

There are then additional industries around packaging, laboratories, certification, research, e-commerce, logistics and tourism.

A Chinese aloe company, AGHG, reports an integrated resource base of about 10 million mature Aloe vera plants and 30,000 tonnes of fresh aloe leaves harvested annually. Its Chinese operation reports more than 300 branded retail outlets and exports to markets including the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Mexico and the Philippines. These are company-reported figures rather than official national statistics, but they demonstrate the commercial depth of China's aloe value chain. (AGHG)

Another global aloe ingredient business with manufacturing in Hainan operates an international distributor network extending across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. (Aloecorp -)

China has also developed aloe-specific industry standards and export-testing procedures — another critical part of turning a crop into an industrial ingredient. (Hnenneas)


THE REAL LESSON FOR BOTSWANA 🇧🇼

This research strengthens my view that Botswana should not copy China's crops blindly; Botswana should study China's industrial architecture.

China did not become successful in bamboo simply because it planted bamboo.

It built:

Resource → production → aggregation → R&D → standards → processing → manufacturing → branding → domestic demand → exports → recycling.

China's emerging cactus experience is following exactly the same pattern.

Its Aloe vera industry demonstrates the same principle at ingredient level.

That is the direction Botswana should take with our own biological resources — including Moringa, Aloe vera, cactus, Devil's Claw, indigenous botanicals, medicinal plants, aromatic crops, natural oils, fibres, livestock biological resources and agro-industrial residues.

A single biological resource does not have to mean one agricultural product.

A crop can become the raw-material platform for 10, 20, 50 or even hundreds of commercial products.

Moringa, for example, should not end at dried leaves. It can feed food ingredients, nutraceuticals, seed oil, cosmetic formulations, animal nutrition, botanical extracts, natural coagulants, agricultural inputs and other industrial applications.

This is precisely why Agriculture-Based Clusters become important. An ABC should bring farmers, laboratories, processors, technology companies, financiers, universities, manufacturers, logistics providers and buyers into one deliberately designed production and industrial system.

China's bamboo economy is already showing the destination:

29+ million livelihoods.
10,000+ processing businesses.
15,000+ product types.
RMB 520+ billion in annual industry value.

The lesson is powerful:

Do not ask only, “What can Botswana grow?”

Ask: “What industries can Botswana manufacture from what it grows?”

That is the difference between agriculture as primary production and agriculture as the foundation of a national bio-economy.

Reference links

The strongest numbers for a Botswana policy or investment presentation are the official Chinese bamboo statistics and the documented Yunnan cactus cluster results. For Aloe vera, I would use the industrial structure, company capacities and market examples but not claim a national Chinese job total until an authoritative national dataset is identified. This distinction will make the argument much more credible to government, financiers and investors.
