I see something much larger:

This is the difference between growing agriculture and designing agriculture.
๐ฎ๐ณ INDIA'S SPICE INDUSTRY SHOWS THE SCALE OF THE OPPORTUNITY
In 2024–25, India produced around 12 million tonnes of spices and exported more than 1.8 million tonnes, earning approximately US$4.72 billion from spice exports.
Ginger forms part of this much larger industrial ecosystem.

In 2025–26, India exported approximately 1.734 million tonnes of spices and spice products worth US$4.431 billion. Ginger and pepper together accounted for about 3% of export earnings by value.

That is important because ginger is not competing only as a vegetable.
It participates in a global spice, extract, flavour, ingredient and botanical economy.
๐ฑ GINGER FARM MANAGEMENT STARTS WITH PLANTING MATERIAL
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University describes ginger as a rhizome-propagated crop and recommends using healthy seed rhizomes.
For the production system it documents, TNAU gives indicative planting-material requirements of approximately:
1,500–1,800 kg/ha in plains
and
2,000–2,500 kg/ha in hilly areas.

These figures should not simply be copied into Botswana production plans.
Our final protocols must be adapted to:

soil
irrigation
planting-material size
variety
disease pressure
buyer specification

But the principle remains universal:
POOR PLANTING MATERIAL CAN COMPROMISE THE ENTIRE VALUE CHAIN BEFORE THE CROP EVEN EMERGES.
๐ฑ VARIETY MATTERS
ICAR identifies IISR-Varada as a landmark ginger variety with reported characteristics of approximately:
22.6 tonnes/ha average yield
1.75% essential oil
20.7% dry recovery
3.29–4.50% fibre

Look carefully at those measurements.
The researchers are not only asking:
“How many tonnes did we harvest?”
They are also measuring:
oil content
dry recovery
fibre content
Why?
Because different industries require different ginger characteristics.
A processor producing extract or oil may value ginger differently from a supermarket buying fresh rhizomes.
That is what Africa must understand.
⏱️ HARVESTING IS MARKET-DEPENDENT
TNAU notes that ginger grown to full maturity may be harvested at around 8–9 months, when leaves begin to yellow and dry.
The institution cites approximately 12–15 tonnes/ha under the production system described on its harvest guidance page.

This should again be treated as an agronomic reference, not a guaranteed Botswana yield.
Yield is a function of:
genetics × environment × soil × water × nutrition × plant health × management.
๐ญ WHAT HAPPENS AFTER HARVEST?
This is where agriculture begins to become industry.
TNAU identifies several ginger post-harvest pathways, including:

ginger candy

An APEDA-commissioned Indian Organic Market & Export Promotion Strategy identified approximately 22 organic ginger product forms in the export dataset it analysed.
The report says the principal product categories included:
ginger TBC
ginger powder
dried sliced ginger
steam-sterilised ginger TBC
Tulsi ginger
ginger extract

The same report found that ginger extract achieved the highest unit value in that specific organic-export dataset — approximately US$379,464 per tonne, with the United States identified as the sole destination in the analysed data.

⚠️ Important: this does not mean ordinary ginger sells for US$379,464 per tonne.
That figure relates to a specialised ginger extract category in the specific organic-export dataset.
This is exactly why we must always ask:
Which product?
Which grade?
Which processing level?
Which certification?
Which destination market?
DRIED SLICED GINGER CAN ALSO COMMAND DIFFERENT PRICES BY MARKET
The same APEDA report showed that dried sliced organic ginger achieved different unit values depending on destination, with Australia appearing as a particularly high-value market in that dataset.

The lesson is simple:
EXPORTING A RHIZOME AND EXPORTING A STANDARDISED EXTRACT ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUSINESSES.
๐งช QUALITY STANDARDS MATTER
The Spices Board lists IS 1988:1993 — Ginger, whole and ground among relevant Indian spice standards.

Codex quality guidance for fresh ginger requires produce to be, among other things:

clean
practically free from pests
properly dried after washing
free of abnormal moisture and foreign odour

That means the export value chain begins on the farm.
A buyer cannot repair poor hygiene, disease contamination, damaged rhizomes or poor traceability after the product reaches the port.

ICAR documented a Kerala ginger grower who moved beyond production into dry ginger and other value-added products, while also becoming a trainer for other farmers.

In Meghalaya, an ICAR-organised ginger festival showcased Farmer Producer Organisations and Self-Help Groups selling processed ginger products and different ginger varieties.

industrialisation does not mean every business has to be a giant factory.
