TURMERIC: DO NOT JUST PLANT IT — DECIDE WHAT INDUSTRY YOU ARE PLANTING FOR
When a farmer sees turmeric, he may see a rhizome.
When an industrial strategist sees turmeric, he should see:
Seed rhizomes → farms → curing → drying → polishing → powder → oil → oleoresin → curcumin → foods → beverages → cosmetics → nutraceutical ingredients → exports.
This is why I keep arguing that Africa must stop measuring agriculture only in hectares.
We should also measure:
How many products?
How many processors?
How many factories?
How many export markets?
How much value remains in the country?
๐ฎ๐ณ INDIA'S TURMERIC SCALE
India produced approximately 1.063 million tonnes of turmeric from 293,000 hectares in 2023–24, according to the Government of India.

That already tells us something: this is not simply a kitchen spice. It is a significant agricultural commodity.
๐ INDIA ACCOUNTED FOR ABOUT 66% OF WORLD TURMERIC EXPORT VALUE IN 2024

India's share: approximately 66%

That is what happens when a country does not merely grow a crop — it develops a market position around it.
๐ฆ INDIA EXPORTED 176,325 TONNES OF TURMERIC IN 2024–25
Official Spices Board figures reported by the Government of India show exports increasing from 162,019 tonnes in 2023–24 to 176,325 tonnes in 2024–25.

๐ฑ BUT BEFORE EXPORT COMES FARM MANAGEMENT
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University recommends commercial turmeric on friable, well-drained loamy soil and identifies propagation using mother and finger rhizomes.
Its production guidance gives a finger-rhizome seed rate of approximately 2,000 kg/ha, with a cited spacing of 45 × 15 cm for the production system described.

This does not mean every Botswana farm should mechanically copy those rates.
Our soil, temperature, irrigation regime, cultivar and buyer specifications must determine our final protocol.
That is what professional agronomy means.
๐ง WATER AND NUTRITION MUST BE MANAGED AS A SYSTEM
TNAU describes drip irrigation and staged nutrient management extending through establishment, vegetative growth, rhizome initiation and rhizome maturation.

A commercial turmeric farmer should therefore record:
Planting date
→ cultivar
→ seed-rhizome source
→ block number
→ irrigation
→ fertilisation
→ crop protection
→ harvest date
→ post-harvest batch
That becomes the beginning of traceability.
⏱️ TURMERIC IS NOT A QUICK CROP
India's Department of Commerce states that turmeric cultivars can take approximately 180–280 days from planting to harvest, depending on variety.

Do not think only:
Fresh turmeric → powder.

India's Ministry of Food Processing Industries identifies turmeric oleoresin as a value-added extract used for colour and aroma in beverages and processed foods.

The Spices Board identifies curcumin among India's value-added spice products and separately lists turmeric powder, turmeric oleoresin and turmeric oil.

This is precisely why choosing the right variety matters.
Some turmeric genetics are developed not merely for tonnage but also for curcumin and oleoresin content.
๐ฑ HIGH-VALUE VARIETY EXAMPLE
ICAR-IISR's Pragati turmeric is reported at approximately:
38–52 t/ha fresh rhizomes
5.02% curcumin
15.29% oleoresin
about 180 days crop duration
under its stated characteristics.

Again, Africa's lesson is not to copy a yield figure blindly.
The lesson is:
Breed and select the crop according to the industry you intend to supply.
A buyer wanting high-curcumin raw material may value a crop differently from someone buying ordinary culinary turmeric.
