INDUSTRIALISATION.
I am working on the design of a Botswana Indigenous Bio-Industry—a structured national economic system through which Botswana's indigenous trees, fruits, nuts, seeds, oils, fibres, medicinal plants and other renewable biological resources can become the raw materials for new industries owned by, processed in and economically benefiting Botswana and its people.
Botswana's next great industrial resource may already be growing around us.
For generations, Africa has looked at indigenous trees mainly through the lenses of traditional food, medicine, culture, conservation, household survival and subsistence livelihoods.
These roles remain important.
But I believe Botswana must now add another dimension:
The proposition is not simply to ask:
What indigenous products can Botswana sell?
We must ask a much larger question:
WHAT INDUSTRIES CAN BOTSWANA BUILD FROM THE BIOLOGICAL RESOURCES IT ALREADY POSSESSES?
That is a completely different development question.
Our starting proposition is that indigenous biodiversity can move through a deliberately engineered chain:

That is the bio-industrial model I am proposing. It develops the original proposition of moving Botswana beyond informal veld-product harvesting into cultivated, traceable, scientifically characterised, processed and exportable industries.
This is not about destroying indigenous trees.
It is the opposite.
The objective is to create sufficient economic value around indigenous biodiversity that Botswana has a powerful commercial reason to identify it, conserve it, propagate it, scientifically understand it, cultivate it and protect it for future generations.
๐ง๐ผ 1. BOTSWANA ALREADY POSSESSES THE BIOLOGICAL CAPITAL
Before looking at Tanzania or China, we must recognise something important:
Botswana is not biologically poor.
The country possesses a substantial range of indigenous plants, trees, fruits, insects and other veld resources that have supported communities for generations.
The United Nations Development Programme's publication on Botswana's non-timber veld products describes Botswana as possessing remarkable biodiversity and estimates that up to 50 different species, excluding fuelwood species, are already contributing to livelihoods, while the potential of many additional species remains insufficiently explored. That statement alone should change the national conversation.
The question is no longer whether Botswana possesses biological resources.
The question is:
How much economic value are we presently losing by leaving those resources largely uncharacterised, undomesticated and underprocessed?
2. BOTSWANA'S VELD PRODUCTS ALREADY HAVE COMMERCIAL RELEVANCE
FAO documentation records that Botswana's forests and woodlands provide a wide range of non-wood forest products, including products used for medicine, food, fodder, household materials, honey and other applications.
FAO also identified external demand for some Botswana resources. For example, it noted a market for Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) in Western Europe, particularly Germany, while mopane worms have established consumption markets domestically and in neighbouring South Africa. (FAOHome)

This is extremely important.
It means Botswana is not trying to create value where none exists.
International commercial signals already exist.
Our problem is that too much of the value chain can remain concentrated at the raw-material level.
We must move from:
Harvesting → Selling
to:
Cultivation → Processing → Standardisation → Manufacturing → Branding → Export.
3. BOTSWANA HAS ALREADY RESEARCHED DOMESTICATION OF INDIGENOUS FRUIT TREES
Perhaps one of the most important pieces of evidence supporting this concept is that Botswana has already conducted work on the selection, improvement and domestication of indigenous fruit trees.

Therefore, when I speak about domesticating Botswana's indigenous trees, I am not introducing an impossible or scientifically unsupported concept.
Botswana has already accumulated relevant experience.
What has been missing is the industrial architecture.
The scientific research needs to be connected to:
genetics → nurseries → commercial orchards → farmers → aggregation → processing → laboratories → manufacturing → standards → buyers → finance → exports.
4. MORULA SHOULD BECOME AN INDUSTRY, NOT SIMPLY A FRUIT
Consider Morula — Sclerocarya birrea.
Morula should not only be considered a seasonal fruit.
It can be approached as a biological feedstock containing several potential industrial fractions.
A deliberately developed Morula value chain can investigate and commercialise appropriate applications across:

That is bio-industrialisation.
5. MONGONGO SHOULD BECOME A SPECIALITY OIL AND INGREDIENT INDUSTRY
Mongongo or Manketti — Schinziophyton rautanenii — deserves similar treatment.
Botswana-related research has examined indigenous seed oils, including Mongongo, using modern analytical techniques.
The existence of scientifically characterisable indigenous oils creates possibilities for investigating applications in sectors such as:
natural cosmetic oils;
speciality food oils where regulatory requirements are satisfied;
personal-care formulations;
soaps;
lotions;
hair-care products;
nutraceutical ingredients where scientifically substantiated;
industrial botanical ingredients.
The important principle is that Botswana should not merely sell nuts.
We should understand the chemistry of the oil.
Then understand the market.
Then establish standards.
Then manufacture.

6. MONKEY ORANGE SHOULD MOVE FROM THE VELD INTO THE FOOD-PROCESSING INDUSTRY
Monkey Orange — Strychnos cocculoides is another strategic candidate.
FAO research describes Monkey Orange as one of the indigenous fruit trees prioritised for domestication in parts of Southern Africa.
It has particularly interesting commercial characteristics because the fruit's hard shell provides comparatively useful shelf-life and road-transport characteristics. FAO records a shelf life of approximately four to six weeks without refrigeration in research on indigenous fruit trees. (FAOHome)

Imagine organised production supplying processing lines making:
fruit pulp → juice → preserves → jams → fruit preparations → dried ingredients → speciality foods.
This is how we begin replacing imports while simultaneously developing exportable Botswana products.
7. MOPANE MUST BE UNDERSTOOD AS AN ECOSYSTEM ECONOMY
Mopane presents another type of opportunity.
The economic value of a tree is not always found only in its wood or fruit.
Sometimes the tree supports an entire productive ecosystem.
The Mopane tree hosts the caterpillar commonly marketed as the mopane worm or phane.

A modern bio-industrial approach should investigate:

8. BOTSWANA'S BIODIVERSITY IS ECONOMIC CAPITAL — BUT IT MUST BE PROTECTED
Industrialisation cannot mean uncontrolled extraction.
FAO reported in December 2024 that Botswana's Miombo and Mopane dry forests support wide-ranging non-wood forest products but are also under pressure from degradation, unsustainable grazing, expansion of agriculture, fuelwood harvesting, overexploitation of non-timber forest products and uncontrolled fires. This is precisely why my proposal is not a mass wild-harvesting programme.
Commercialisation must trigger domestication.
As demand rises, we must deliberately move from:
WILD COLLECTION
towards:
MANAGED NATURAL STANDS + NURSERIES + ORCHARDS + AGROFORESTRY + COMMERCIAL CULTIVATION.
FAO has itself argued in the Southern African indigenous-fruit context that, for market security, gradual movement from wild-tree fruit harvesting toward orchards could enable outgrower models. (FAOHome)

๐ง๐ผ 9. BOTSWANA GOVERNMENT IS ALREADY MOVING TOWARD THIS THINKING
There is now particularly strong evidence that national thinking is beginning to move in the same direction.
On 12 August 2026, Botswana Government reported that indigenous knowledge has the potential to support economic diversification, particularly in rural areas, through commercialisation of local knowledge, skills and technologies.
The report went significantly further.
It stated that traditional knowledge could support the development of alternative raw materials for industrial production, sustainable processing of natural resources, SMMEs, pharmaceutical development, employment creation and rural economies.
It also highlighted the importance of Botswana's Access and Benefit Sharing Act of 2022 in regulating genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge and enabling fair and equitable benefit sharing. (Daily News)

It can become an implementation mechanism for it.
10. BOTSWANA GOVERNMENT IS ALSO RECOGNISING THE NEED FOR CULTIVATION AND CONSERVATION
On 16 April 2026, Botswana's Minister of Environment and Tourism informed Parliament that the Ministry was promoting indigenous plants and preserving germplasm through planting programmes.
Government specifically identified:
community-based cultivation;
nurseries;
agroforestry;
seed banking;
living collections;
possible tissue culture;
genetic-diversity conservation;
research;
traditional-knowledge documentation;
propagation research

Conservation and commercialisation therefore do not have to be enemies.
Properly designed, they can finance each other.

This matters.
Such enterprises should not remain isolated success stories.

Botswana does not need to begin without African precedent.
Tanzania provides a particularly useful lesson.
I do not claim Tanzania has completed the kind of integrated bio-industry I am proposing for Botswana.
What Tanzania demonstrates is that an African country can deliberately bring forest resources and non-wood forest products into:
public policy → sustainable forest management → value-chain development → enterprise development → community participation → processing → commercialisation.
That is the part Botswana should study.

A 2024 peer-reviewed Tanzanian study investigated Baobab populations and fruit value chains in Kilolo and Iringa.
Researchers interviewed value-chain actors including:
harvesters;
wholesalers;
middlemen;
processors;
retailers;
consumers.
They found value being generated along the chain but also identified constraints including poor storage, inadequate processing, limited market information, lack of capital and seasonal supply.
Crucially, researchers concluded that Baobab was still being harvested from naturally occurring trees and recommended domestication and commercialisation to increase its contribution to community economies. (ScienceDirect)

Do not build large markets on permanently wild supply.

China provides the industrial benchmark.
China demonstrates what becomes possible when biological resources are integrated into:
science + breeding + cultivation + processing + machinery + manufacturing + standards + finance + industrial clustering + trade.
This is where the Botswana concept ultimately needs to go.

This should fundamentally change how African countries think about forests, indigenous trees and biological resources.
They are not only conservation assets.
When properly managed, they can also become manufacturing assets.

That is the lesson.
China did not simply ask:
How much bamboo can we grow?
It asked:
How many products, factories, technologies, jobs and markets can we build around bamboo?
Botswana needs to ask exactly the same kind of question.

For Morula, we should ask:
How many food, cosmetic and botanical ingredient industries can we develop?
For Mongongo, ask:
How many speciality oils, cosmetic ingredients and value-added products?
For Monkey Orange:
How many processed fruit ingredients and speciality food products?
For Baobab:
How many fruit powders, oils, fibres, food ingredients and other scientifically validated products?
For Mopane ecosystems:
How much value can be captured through food, protein, ecological enterprise and sustainable woodland management?
For Devil's Claw:
Can Botswana move beyond exporting botanical raw material into extraction, standardisation and ingredient manufacturing—subject to the full requirements governing medicinal and botanical products?
For Morama:
Can we develop food ingredients, proteins, oils and speciality products from this remarkable dryland biological resource?
For every species, our question should become:
WHAT IS THE COMPLETE PRODUCT TREE?
One biological resource should not produce one product.
We should investigate its:
fruit;
seed;
kernel;
oil;
fibre;
protein;
leaf;
bark where sustainable and lawful;
gum;
resin;
pulp;
shell;
biomass;
extract;
secondary processing streams.
Then determine what science, safety, regulation and markets permit.

The opportunity is considerably larger than food processing.

For every candidate species, we should document:

Only after this do we build the investment case.
24. COMMERCIALISATION MUST TRIGGER DOMESTICATION
This is perhaps the most important environmental rule in the entire programme.
I do not want Botswana to discover an international market and then respond by sending thousands of people into the veld to remove more material.
That is not bio-industrialisation.
That is extraction.
The correct commercial pathway is:
1. Identify the resource.
2. Study natural populations.
3. Establish sustainable harvesting limits.
4. Collect germplasm.
5. Select superior mother plants.
6. Develop propagation protocols.
7. Establish nurseries.
8. Establish community production blocks.
9. Establish commercial orchards.
10. Introduce agroforestry production.
11. Maintain protected wild genetic populations.

๐ง 25. BOTSWANA MUST PROTECT INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE BEFORE COMMERCIALISING IT
The bio-industry is not only about plants.
It is also about knowledge.
Communities have accumulated generations of knowledge concerning:
edible species;
medicinal plants;
harvesting;
preparation;
storage;
seasonal cycles;
ecological relationships;
livestock applications;
water;
food preservation.
That knowledge can have enormous scientific and commercial value.
But commercial development must not become biopiracy.
Botswana Government has itself recognised this challenge and the importance of the Access and Benefit Sharing framework, intellectual-property mechanisms and equitable participation by knowledge holders. (Daily News)

2. GERMPLASM AND GENETIC RESOURCES CENTRE
Conserves, catalogues and researches indigenous genetic resources.
3. INDIGENOUS TREE NURSERIES
Propagates selected plant material at scale.
4. COMMUNITY PRODUCTION CLUSTERS
Organises communities around sustainable production and domestication.
5. COMMERCIAL BIORESOURCE FARMS
Establishes scalable commercial orchards and agroforestry systems.
6. AGGREGATION CENTRES
Handles:
registration;
traceability;
weighing;
grading;
lot identification;
temporary storage.
7. PRIMARY PROCESSING CENTRES
Handles:
washing;
sorting;
drying;
pulping;
cracking;
shelling;
milling;
pressing.
8. BIOREFINERY
Separates biological materials into economically useful fractions.
9. LABORATORY
Performs:
microbiology;
chemistry;

Finances production according to real value chains rather than disconnected activities.
This develops the cluster architecture already set out in the concept: producers provide biological feedstock, processors transform it, scientists characterise it, manufacturers formulate it, and exporters commercialise it.

Botswana built one of Africa's most respected economies by understanding the value of the mineral wealth beneath its soil.
Our next transformation requires us to become equally intelligent about the biological wealth growing above that soil.
The comparison is not that trees will immediately replace diamonds.
The point is that Botswana must progressively diversify the number of productive assets upon which its economy depends.
Our indigenous plants are among those assets.
Morula must become more than a fruit.
Mongongo must become more than a nut.
Monkey Orange must become more than something collected from the veld.
Baobab must become more than an iconic tree.
Devil's Claw must become more than an exported raw botanical.
Phane must become more than an informal seasonal food.
Indigenous knowledge must become more than something remembered by older generations.
These resources can increasingly become:

Botswana must design its own model.
Our competitive advantages are different.
Our ecology is different.
Our population is different.
Our indigenous resources are different.

Therefore, the Botswana model should be a dryland indigenous bioeconomy model designed around resource efficiency, high-value products, controlled production, traceability and export markets.

I am not proposing another tree-planting campaign.
I am not proposing another donor-dependent conservation project.
I am not proposing that everybody run into the bush and harvest indigenous plants.
I am not proposing another programme where farmers produce first and look for buyers afterwards.
I am proposing an economic architecture.
A Botswana Indigenous Bio-Industrial System where:
scientists identify value;
communities protect knowledge;
nurseries multiply genetic resources;
farmers cultivate;
communities manage sustainable natural resources;
laboratories establish specifications;
processing plants transform biomass;
manufacturers create products;
certification protects market credibility;
exporters access international markets;
financiers fund complete transactions;
communities participate in ownership and income;
and commercial value finances conservation.
That is a completely different approach to agriculture and natural-resource development.
32. WE DO NOT SIMPLY FARM — WE DESIGN THE ECONOMY AROUND WHAT WE FARM
This is the philosophy behind my work.
Agriculture must stop being understood only as:
land + seed + water + farmer = crop.
Modern agriculture is:
biology + science + infrastructure + technology + finance + standards + manufacturing + logistics + markets + data + policy.
And the same thinking can now be applied to Botswana's indigenous biological resources.
We must stop asking communities merely to harvest.
We must help them own positions within industries.
We must stop measuring success only in hectares planted.
We must measure:
industrial output;
manufacturing capacity;
jobs;
rural enterprises;
export earnings;
locally retained value;
intellectual property;
research output;
biodiversity restored;
hectares domesticated;
processing capacity;
number of products developed;
value-chain participation;
foreign exchange generated.

China looked at bamboo and developed thousands of product categories around it.
Tanzania recognised that forests can support structured value chains and community economic participation.
Botswana already possesses indigenous biodiversity.
Botswana already possesses indigenous knowledge.
Botswana already has decades of research demonstrating that important indigenous fruit trees can be selected, propagated and domesticated.
Government is currently discussing commercialisation of indigenous knowledge, industrial raw materials, benefit sharing, indigenous-plant conservation, nurseries and agroforestry. (Daily News)
So the question is no longer:
CAN BOTSWANA DO IT?
The real questions are:
WHO WILL DESIGN IT?
WHO WILL ORGANISE IT?
WHO WILL FINANCE IT?
WHO WILL BUILD THE PROCESSING INFRASTRUCTURE?
WHO WILL PROTECT THE GENETICS AND INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE?
WHO WILL DEVELOP THE PRODUCTS?
WHO WILL OPEN THE MARKETS?
AND HOW DO WE ENSURE BATSWANA OWN AND BENEFIT FROM THE VALUE CREATED?
That is the work before us.
